They were great when you can commit to assault engineers meta spam opening.
Because ive gained a new appreciation of them through their combat qualities. Ive also been using pioneers on mass to fill a similar role, and I cant say im disappointed.
Assault engineers are really solid early game units, and help push up on the germans who aren't ready for the murderous engis. maybe op? Ive had some hilarious dunk feasts on panzergrens with them.
Assault engineers are great, and the brits version of the unit is also.
